Penstemon Varieties at E. N. Coxhead
At E N Coxhead we supply a range of Penstemon flowering perennials selected for reliability, strong colour and ease of care.
Penstemon: resilience with ornamental value
Our Penstemon range combines resilience with ornamental value. Whether you want striking foliage in Husker Red, strong colour from the Polaris series, or the decorative effect of Red Picotee, our selection ensures a lasting summer display. All our Penstemon are available in 1ltr pots, with 8 pots to a tray. Below you will find details of six popular varieties we are currently offering, each with its own distinct qualities:
Penstemon Husker Red – foliage and flowers
Husker Red is notable for its deep red foliage, which provides interest before flowering begins. Tall stems carry white, sometimes faintly pink, tubular flowers through summer. Hardy and drought-tolerant, it is well suited to mid-border planting and adds both structure and colour contrast.
Penstemon Polaris Magenta – compact growth and bright colour
The Polaris Magenta cultivar produces vivid magenta flowers with a clear white throat. Reaching around 45 cm, it maintains a neat habit that makes it suitable for front to mid-border use. Flowering from June into late summer, it is dependable in both formal and informal designs.
Penstemon Polaris Purple – deep tones for cooler schemes
Polaris Purple features dark purple flowers with contrasting white throats. Compact and upright, it is uniform in growth and particularly effective when paired with silver, blue, or white planting schemes. Its colour depth brings balance to cooler borders.
Penstemon Polaris Red – strong colour and reliable flowering
For gardeners seeking bold impact, Polaris Red delivers bright red flowers that remain vibrant across the season. Uniform in shape and height, it is an excellent option for repeat planting or mass display. Like the rest of the Polaris series, it is long-flowering and weather resistant.
Penstemon Polaris Rose – soft pink tones for mixed borders
Polaris Rose offers softer pink flowers with the classic Polaris white throat. Less intense than Magenta or Red, it blends well with cottage-garden planting or pastel-themed borders. Its compact form and long season make it a versatile choice.
Penstemon Red Picotee – striking bicolour display
Red Picotee is valued for its red flowers edged in white, producing a distinct two-tone effect. Eye-catching in mixed borders, it works best in positions where the colour contrast can be seen up close.
Growing and care of Penstemon
All of these cultivars prefer free-draining soil in full sun, though they will also tolerate partial shade. Deadheading encourages extended flowering, and a light prune in spring helps maintain compact growth. While hardy, they benefit from a sheltered site to avoid frost and waterlogging.
