Dianthus is a well-loved group of flowering plants valued for their bright colours, delicate fragrance and neat growth habit. Often associated with traditional cottage gardens, these plants provide reliable colour from late spring through the summer months. Their compact form and ability to tolerate relatively dry conditions make them particularly suitable for borders, rockeries and container planting.

Beautifully distinctive flowers

Many gardeners recognise Dianthus for its beautifully distinctive flowers. The petals are often finely fringed or serrated, creating a soft, feathery appearance. Some varieties also produce a subtle clove-like scent, which adds another attractive dimension to garden planting. Because they remain fairly compact, they work well at the front of borders or as edging plants.

• Soil: Well-drained, slightly alkaline soil preferred
• Light: Full sun
• Water: Moderate; dislikes waterlogged soil
• Hardiness: Many varieties are hardy in the UK

Dianthus care

After planting out, Dianthus require full sun and well-drained soil to thrive. Water moderately while the plant establishes, then only when the soil becomes dry, as they dislike waterlogged conditions.

Dead head regularly to encourage continuous blooming through summer. A light general fertiliser in spring can help support healthy growth, but heavy feeding is unnecessary. If plants become leggy after flowering, trim them back lightly to maintain a compact shape and sometimes encourage a second flush of blooms. Ensure good drainage during winter, as cold, wet soil is the most common cause of plant loss.
