Annuals, Biennials or Perennials
Herbaceous plants are often characterized by green, succulent, and soft stems, unlike the woody, tough, and brown stems that normally define non-herbaceous plants. Herbaceous plants have no persistent woody stem above ground and they may be annuals, biennials or perennials. Annual herbaceous plants die completely at the end of the growing season or when they have flowered and fruited, and they then grow again from seed.
Because herbaceous plants possess parts that survive below the ground, they plants can survive the winter despite their fragile stems. The parts below ground are where most of the nutrients are stored during colder seasons. Herbaceous plants are subsequently a popular choice for winter landscapes.
Non-Woody, Fast Growing Plants
Herbaceous plants are non-woody plants, such as most ferns and grasses which either form tiny amounts of hard woody tissue or none at all. Herbaceous plants are typically fast-growing, producing lots of seeds in a short amount of time. They can be categorized into forbs, which are flowering and don’t have a grass-like appearance, or graminoids, which resemble grass with their long, sharp leaves.
Unlike woody plants, such as trees, herbaceous plants don’t have a stem that will remain above the ground when their leaves die. Additionally, the body of an herbaceous plant is mainly made up of cellulose, which makes it relatively flexible and fragile, while the stems of a woody plant have lignin, which is far stronger, providing the plant with stiffness, and which lasts for years.
