Growing Good Wallflowers
Wallflowers are ideal for planting in borders or on banks and slopes. They are also ideal for courtyard gardens and informal garden patios and container pots. They grow well in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral or alkaline soil. If Wallflowers are planted in wet, badly drained soil they can easily struggle, so a well-drained substrate is paramount to the success of growing good Wallflowers.
As Wallflowers or “Erysimum” are part of the brassica family, they are particularly susceptible to clubroot. So, planting in well drained, alkaline soils will aid the plants’ health and growth. According to Monty Don, the fact that Wallflowers get into the lime-mortar of old walls is a pretty good indication of their preference for chalky, very well-drained soil.
Monty Don also points out that wallflowers are really perennial, but it suits gardeners to treat them as biennial to get the best from them, otherwise they tend to become leggy and sprawly and the florification diminishes.

Caring for Your Wallflowers
To care for your Wallflowers make sure to keep the substrate moist, especially when plants are flowering, but make sure not to over water. Regular liquid feeds will help prolong the flowering period and deadheading plants and removing the developing seedpods will prolong flowering and give you the best possible show.
Attracting Pollinators
Wallflowers are pollinator-generalists, their flowers being visited by many different species of bees, bee flies, hoverflies, butterflies, beetles, and ants. This makes wallflowers ideal for planting alongside certain crops which require pollination and so are ideal to plant within an allotment.
If you want to see a good show of bees and butterflies in your garden, then plant an array of Wallflowers. You will not be disappointed.
