EN Coxhead wallflowers are available bare-rooted for autumn planting, in bags of 25 plants.
Wallflowers can grow to half a metre high with up to half a metre spread. Planting distance is therefore important and you must position plants at least 15cm from each other to allow them room to flourish. Flowering in March wallflowers offer a splash of colour when there is little else in bloom.
How to Grow Wallflowers
Wallflowers grow best in moist but well-drained soil, in full sun to partial shade. The ground should be prepared before planting out. Dig it over thoroughly and mix in plenty of organic matter, such as manure or leaf mould. The planting location should have good drainage and ideally, the soil should be slightly alkaline.
Wallflowers work well when planted with spring bulbs such as tulips or daffodils and can also be grown in pots. Perennial wallflowers are best planted towards the front of a mixed ornamental border. Cut back your wallflowers periodically to maintain a good shape and promote flowering. When your wallflowers do come into flower make sure to pinch dead flower heads back.
By pinching back, you will force the plant to grow twice as many stems, which results in a fuller wallflower display. Simply pinch the stem above the leaf nodes using your fingers or pruning shears.
Pests and Disease
Wallflowers are part of the brassica family and therefore can be prone to club root and other diseases that affect this family of plants. Downy mildew, leaf blight and flea beetle can cause problems; and beware slug and snail damage to young plants.
By considering where and how you plant your wallflowers and by looking after them correctly, you will be rewarded with an excellent show of flowers early on in the season, bringing colour to your garden when little else is in show. Wallflowers really do herald the start of the growing season, and in fine fashion.
