Rock Rose, Sunrose, Rushrose, or Frostweed
Helianthemum take their name from the Greek words for the sun “helios”, and a flower “anthemon”. Also known as Rock Rose, Sunrose, Rushrose, or Frostweed, Helianthemum is a genus of around 110 species of flowering plants in the family Cistaceae.
Bushy or spreading evergreen shrubs
Helianthemum are bushy or spreading evergreen shrubs with small, paired leaves and saucer-shaped flowers borne in short racemes in spring and early summer.
They are mat-forming with evergreen foliage and are generally found to be pest and disease free. They grow in fertile, neutral to alkaline, moist but well-drained soil in full sun and are most suitable for the front of a border, rock gardens, as ground cover on a sunny bank or in planters or pots.
Pruning and dividing
Divide in spring. Division needed only every 4 to 5 years. Maintenance and care: Cut back after flowering to encourage growth.
These highly vigorous spreading plants need to be pruned back by about a third after flowering, to ensure a compact and tidy habit. This may also encourage further flowering later in the season.
How to Water
Water regularly throughout active growth when the soil becomes dry to the touch and throughout periods of drought. Once established Helianthemum are a little more drought tolerant. Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly whilst in growth to encourage better flowering and foliage performance.
