The Halloween Tradition

Throughout Britain, Halloween has traditionally been celebrated by children’s games such as bobbing for apples in containers full of water, telling ghost stories and the carving of faces into hollowed-out vegetables such as swedes and turnips. These faces would usually be illuminated from inside by using a candle and the lanterns were displayed on windowsills to ward off any evil spirits.

The current use of pumpkins is a relatively modern innovation. However, carving a pumpkin is now considered one of the most traditional things about Halloween. The Halloween pumpkin is cut and hollowed out to create a grimacing face and it is lit from the inside with a small candle. In line with tradition the carved Halloween pumpkin celebrates the memory of lost souls and it considered that the light shining out through the carved faces will scare away any evil spirits which may be lurking in the shadows.

When Should You Purchase & Carve Your Pumpkins?

Anytime in the month of October in the run-up to Halloween is a perfectly appropriate time to purchase your pumpkins. Pumpkins last 8 to 12 weeks after they have been picked. It is after you have carved them that the clock starts ticking, as after pumpkins are carved and the seeds are removed, they only tend to last between five and ten days. So now is the time to make your purchase and the week before Halloween is the perfect time to carve it.
