Caryophyllaceae
Also known as “Pinks” Dianthus belong to a family of plants called Caryophyllaceae, which are mainly herbaceous perennials and includes Carnations. They are characterised by the spicy fragrance of their blooms.
Mainly native to Europe and Asia, Dianthus flowers have five petals, typically with a frilled or pinked margin and are usually pale to dark pink in colour. And don’t be confused by the name “pinks.” While many varieties do have pink flowers, this nickname comes from the fringed edges of the flower petals, not the colour of the flower itself.
Dianthus also feature handsome foliage that is showy in its own right when the plants are not in bloom. Dianthus leaves are opposite, simple, mostly linear and often strongly grey green to blue green.
Good Amount of Sun
When planting Dianthus look for a location that receives a good amount of sun. If the base of the plant stays too moist, the crown can rot, so also try to plant in a well-drained soil. If the soil in your garden is heavy clay, consider containers or raised beds for your plants instead.
