Planting poppies in the UK
Most poppies prefer a free-draining soil and an open, sunny position. Heavy soils should be improved with grit or sharp sand before planting. Annual and biennial Papaver varieties establish best when sown or planted in spring or early autumn.
Avoid excessive soil enrichment. Poppies perform better in moderately fertile soils, where root growth is strong but foliage remains balanced. Once planted, water lightly to settle the soil. Overwatering should be avoided.
Variety-specific guidance
Poppy Alpina Papaver
A compact alpine poppy suited to rockeries and raised beds. Requires excellent drainage and full sun. Tolerates cold well but dislikes winter wet.
Poppy Checkers Papaver
Grown for its distinctive patterned flowers. Performs best in open ground with good air circulation. Deadheading prolongs flowering.
Poppy Flore Pleno Papaver
A double-flowered variety producing high visual impact. Needs support in exposed sites. Best grown in borders with light shelter.
Poppy Iceland Papaver
Often grown as a biennial. Prefers cooler conditions and flowers well in spring and early summer. Responds well to deadheading.
Poppy Ladybird Papaver
An annual variety valued for bold red flowers with dark markings. Easy to grow from seed. Ideal for meadow-style planting and mass displays.
Poppy Orange/Red Papaver
A versatile group suitable for mixed borders and informal schemes. Performs reliably in most UK soils provided drainage is adequate.
Poppy Orientalis Papaver
A long-lived perennial with large, dramatic blooms. Dies back after flowering and should not be disturbed once established. Requires space and patience.
Ongoing care and maintenance
Poppies require minimal maintenance. Remove spent flower heads unless seed set is required. Avoid excessive feeding, which encourages soft growth and monitor for slug damage on young plants. With correct planting and care, EN Coxhead Papaver varieties deliver strong results across a wide range of planting schemes.
